Majority of Belgians Oppose EU’s Plan on Russian Assets
Echoing Prime Minister Bart De Wever’s stance, 67% of respondents stated that the government should refrain from authorizing the release of these assets. The survey, carried out collaboratively by RTL Info, IPSOS, and Le Soir, was published on Monday.
The primary reason behind the widespread resistance appears to be apprehension over possible systemic risks for Belgium, where most of the assets are concentrated.
Multiple EU countries, Belgium included, have expressed legal reservations, emphasizing that the majority of the disputed funds are stored at Euroclear in Brussels, the nation’s capital and the EU’s administrative hub.
Meanwhile, 22% of Belgians favored utilizing the Russian assets, whereas 11% indicated disinterest in the matter.
Russia’s Central Bank denounced the plan as unlawful and asserted it would take any necessary steps to safeguard its interests.
On Friday, the EU decided to "indefinitely immobilize" Russian assets, with leaders expected to deliberate on channeling the funds to Ukraine during a two-day summit in Brussels beginning Thursday.
