Belgium Urges Iran to Seize US Talks for Peace Deal

(MENAFN) Belgian Foreign Minister Maxime Prevot called on Iran and the United States to capitalize on ongoing negotiations, saying the diplomatic track presents a critical opportunity to secure a broad peace agreement that could also help stabilize Lebanon.

Following a phone call with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on Monday, Prevot said he emphasized the need for both sides to intensify efforts toward a negotiated settlement.

“I told Minister Araghchi that the talks with the US offer an opportunity that must be seized to reach a comprehensive peace agreement. Every effort must be made on both sides to reach swiftly a peace agreement, including for Lebanon, whose territorial integrity must be respected by Israel,” he wrote on US social media company X.

Prevot also pressed Tehran over its regional activities, urging Iranian authorities to end what he described as a “destabilizing” role in the Middle East, including support for allied armed groups. He said prolonged conflict has already imposed a heavy cost on both the region and the international community.

The Belgian minister additionally raised concerns over maritime security and international shipping routes during the discussion, focusing on access through the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.

“I insisted upon the obligation to respect the right of transit passage through the Strait of Hormuz, in accordance with international law,” he said.

“According to Belgium, there should not be any obstacle, any payment of any sort,” he added.

Regional tensions have remained elevated since US and Israeli strikes targeted Iran on Feb. 28. Tehran later responded with attacks against Israel and US-aligned partners in the Gulf, while also closing the Strait of Hormuz.

Although a ceasefire brokered through Pakistani mediation took effect on April 8, subsequent negotiations held in Islamabad failed to deliver a long-term agreement, leaving key disputes unresolved.
